Holm A. Swenson

Most Worshipful Grand Master, 1978-1979

Holm A. Swenson was born on a farm near Belmond, Iowa on April 30, 1914. When Holm was nine years old the family moved to Belmond and it was there that he received his early schooling graduating from high school in 1932. He lived in or near Detroit since 1933. His business career included two years with the Socony Vacuum Oil Company, ten as a wholesale distributor for the Bowes Seal Fast Corporation and sixteen as a Gulf Oil Company distributor for tires, batteries and accessories. He became a Real Estate broker In 1969 and as he progressed up the Grand Lodge ladder he gradually withdrew from active participation in the business.

On October 28, 1937 he married Arlene Dorenkamp. They were blessed with a son and two daughters.

He was raised as a Master Mason in Metropolitan Lodge No. 519 on November 16, 1946. Ten years later he served as Worshipful Master. He was a member of School Craft Chapter No. 184, R.A.M.; Northville Council No. 30, R. & S.M.; Detroit Commandery No. 1, K.T. and Detroit Consistory, A. & A.S.R. Other memberships were in Moslem Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S.; Detroit Court No. 28, Royal Order of Jesters; Detroit York Rite College No. 1 and Metropolitan Chapter No. 519, O.E.S. He has been active in Shrine affairs as well as in the Metropolitan Masters’ Association and the Wardens’ Association. For many years he was President of the Masonic Temple Association. The DeMolay Supreme Council has honored him by selecting him to its Legion of Honor. He held the York Rite College Order of the Purple Cross. He was an honorary member of at least six lodges including one in Holy Land No. 50 in Tel Aviv, Israel.

He died on April 14, 1986.
