Most Worshipful Grand Master, 1916-1917

John H. Hawks was born on a farm near Adrian, Michigan on February 25, 1871. He lived there until he was sixteen years of age, when his father died. Then he moved to the city of Adrian to live with his grandmother. His mother having died when he was five years old.

He completed a course in the High School in Adrian and later attended Adrian College, and took a short course at the University of Michigan.

He began business life with the United States Express Company, serving them in various capacities from 1895 to 1907. He then began work for the Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York and rapidly became one of their most valuable agents, being advanced until he occupied the position of District Manager.

He was raised as a Master Mason on October 26, 1894 in Adrian Lodge, No. 19. He transferred from Adrian Lodge No. 19 to Lansing Lodge No. 33, on November 18, 1904. He was a Royal Arch Mason and belonged to Capital Chapter No. 9, R.A.M.; a Royal and Select Masons of Lansing Council No. 29, R. & S.M.; a Knight Templar of Lansing Commandery No. 25, K.T., and a member of De Witt Clinton Consistory 32° of Grand Rapids, Michigan also a member of Elf Khurafeh Temple, A.A.O.N.O.M.S. of Saginaw, Michigan,

His advent in the Grand Lodge, F. & A.M., of Michigan commenced with his election as Worshipful Grand Marshal at the Annual Communication in 1910, and he was regularly promoted at each succeeding Annual Communication, until his election as Most Worshipful Grand Master in 1916.

He died on November 12, 1952.
